'The Graveyard Book' Adaptation

During my Masters Degree at Teesside University (2016) I had the opportunity to create a concept art project of my own.

I was inspired by games such as Crash Bandicoot, Spyro and Psychonauts to create art for a 3D platformer game with some darker themes that could be played by all ages, including children. I researched children's books to provide a dark, entertaining, character driven subject matter. I decided to draw inspiration from Neil Gaiman's novel The Graveyard Book; the story of Bod who is raised in a graveyard among supernatural beings and ventures into other-worldly dimensions.

Artists such as John Kehn and Edward Gorey, both influences of Tim Burton, heavily impacted my creative style during the project; the use of line, distorted shapes, and pencils & markers for concept iterations.

Though my project primarily focussed on character concepts, I also produced game level assets, platforms, and character props. To bring 2D platform concepts to life I used Autodesk Maya, which enabled me to prove how different platform arrangements could work in a 3D game environment.
